Rogers brings out “Daytime Friends,” the opening track from Lucille, in the middle of the setlist for a wonderful crowd reception. He keeps the set moving with a collection of intriguing covers. With this, Rogers plays his late career shows rather safe, staying away from newer material despite their modest sales and critical reception. One of his top 5 most popular songs, “Lady,” plays in the middle of the set or towards the end. It is also one of the oldest original compositions Kenny Rogers still manages to play on a regular basis. He begins his encore with the song as perhaps an ode to his past success. Rogers first major hit was “Lucille” from his 1977 self-titled album. It comes as a little surprise for him to close the majority of shows with this track. Despite it being oddly covered by the Bee Gees in the late 70’s, Rogers and Parton hold ownership to this original classic. The artist’s most popular song is “Islands in the Stream,” his original duet with Dolly Parton. These include Don Schlitz’s “The Gambler” and the John Hiatt country classic crooner, “Have a Little Faith in Me.” His newest arsenal of covers includes the Jerry Lee Lewis tune “Just Dropped In.” He also wraps up his set (or at least moves it to the two closing songs) with a string of covers. This is pretty standard for the genre, and something fans of Rogers have come to expect coming into his shows. Rogers tosses about quite a few covers both within and outside the country genre. Oddly, he only pulls out one song live from that new record the throwback tune, “’Merica.” He is touring on his latest album, You Can’t Make Old Friends. Kenny Rogers has almost thirty albums to his credit between 26-35 depending on what you include as a studio album. What songs will Kenny Rogers play in concert?Ĭountry artists have a certain tenacity to them that keeps them going for decades while also providing a new record every other year for the duration of their career.
